In 2012, the Harris Township Planning Commission undertook a comprehensive analysis of the Township’s zoning districts. As a result of this review, the Commission recommended additional long range planning for portions of the Township that are outside of the Centre Region’s Regional Growth Boundary and Sewer Service Area.
In 2014, the Planning Commission began working on the the Designated Rural Areas Project, which focused on identifying long range planning goals and a zoning implementation strategy for rural properties in the Township. The goals of this project included protecting the existing character of rural properties, providing farmers with opportunities to diversify agricultural operations and balancing new development with open space preservation.
Over the past three years, the Planning Commission worked on drafting new zoning districts and supplemental regulations that would implement the goals identified in the Designated Rural Areas Project.
