Local author and historian Cathy Horner has released “Growing Up in Boalsburg: Voices of the 1950s,” a collection of stories, photographs, and firsthand memories of life in the village during the 1950s, drawn from interviews with longtime residents. All proceeds benefit the Boalsburg Heritage Museum and the Centre County Historical Society. Copies are available at the Boalsburg Heritage Museum, the Centre Furnace Mansion, and Breakfast on Boal.

Please note that the compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents are responsible for loading and transporting their own compost, so be sure to bring your own shovels and containers.

In 2023, the Harris Township Board of Supervisors approved a franchise agreement with Shentel (glofiber) to permit the installation of cable utility infrastructure within the Township’s rights-of-way. Since 2024, Shentel has proceeded with installation activities after obtaining the required Township permits. Where overhead lines exist, Shentel is utilizing existing utility poles to install its lines; where overhead lines do not exist, the company installs underground infrastructure within street rights-of-way or existing easements, along with associated above-ground accessory structures.
Harris Township started issuing permits to Shentel in November 2024 for the areas that require groundwork. As part of the permitting process, Shentel must permanently restore the areas within Township street rights-of-way that they in any way disturb and they must warrant such work for two years following Township inspection and approval of the restoration. Permanent restoration cannot take place until after winter when grass can grow. Township staff will walk each disturbed area with Shentel representatives when work in those areas is complete and restoration appears to be compliant with Township standards. Staff will also periodically check those areas for the following two years in case any warranty work is required.
Work crews will be in various sections of the Township and will be providing notification prior to any work in your neighborhood. Work is weather dependent; therefore, no set schedule is available.

The Centre County Refuse & Recycling Authority is excited to announce that a new miscellaneous plastics recycling container is now available in Harris Township!
Location: Nittany View Park, 1021 Boalsburg Pike
This drop-off site will now include:
A recycling container for plastic, metal, glass & paper
A separate container for corrugated cardboard
A container for miscellaneous plastics
Each container is clearly labeled with signs showing acceptable and non-acceptable items to help make recycling easy and accurate.
Adding more drop-off locations for miscellaneous plastics was one of the top requests in a recent survey completed by the Authority, and they are grateful they were able to take this step in response to feedback from residents.
It may be a small change, but it’s an important one – and it’s made possible because residents spoke up and they listened.
Residents and visitors are reminded that the Harris Township ordinance requires those who walk their dogs to clean up after them. Specifically, the ordinance requires that the dog owner or keeper shall immediately remove and dispose of all feces deposited by any dog on private or public property not under the control of the owner or keeper of such dog; further, the owner or keeper shall dispose of feces in a sanitary manner. Failure to clean up after a dog is an ordinance violation, meaning that prosecution could occur upon receipt of a complaint.

At their December 8, 2025, meeting, the Board of Supervisors adopted Ordinance No. 382, establishing licensing regulations for short-term rentals. Property owners wishing to rent on a short-term basis, which is defined as 29 consecutive days or less in duration, must obtain a Rental Housing Permit from the Centre Region Code Administration (CRCA) and a Short-Term Rental License from Harris Township. Properties containing a short-term rental must be owner-occupied unless otherwise permitted by the ordinance.
The Township’s website has a page dedicated to short-term rental licensing and includes a copy of the adopted ordinance and applications. The site can be accessed by clicking here.
The short-term rental license process is new for both applicants and Township staff, so we expect a learning curve on both sides. Staff is happy to assist applicants throughout the process and will communicate any questions that arise throughout the review of applications. Applicants are welcome to contact the Zoning Officer, who also serves as the Short-Term Rental Officer, with any questions or concerns.
